I am really excited to share one of my FAVORITE performance expectations. This video tutorial will show you how to setup an experiment for the NGSS Standard: 5-LS1-1. Support an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water.

When I thought about how the standard was written ("Support an argument..."), I wanted to make sure that their argument was support by evidence that felt REAL to students. What more powerful way to support an argument than with evidence from your own experiment?

In this performance expectation, the class will set up an investigation to determine which materials plants need for growth, by taking one material away from each of 4 plants. Students will collect the height and descriptive data about the plants 3 times over 2 weeks, to come to the conclusion that plants must have sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide, and that while soil does help a plant to grow better, a plant can survive without soil.

Hope you enjoy the video! If you would like supplemental worksheets to go along with this resource, they are available here at my TpT store: 5-LS1-1. Worksheets

I would love to hear your comments and questions! Happy growing!
